You hear about the latest fad diet, check out some pretty amazing testimonials and before/after pics on Instagram, buy the food/pills/shakes/teas/membership required. You are PUMPED. This is going to be your triumphant attempt at losing the extra weight you’ve been struggling with for years.

And so the cycle repeats itself as you get increasingly frustrated with your weight (and yourself) or give up and think that you’ll never be able to lose the weight.

1. Your Body Thinks You’re Starving

The first problem with fad diets is that when you focus on losing weight – instead of fat – you lose sight of feeding your body with the right nutrients for it to function at its best.

You might see rapid weight loss at the beginning by consuming a low-calorie or restrictive diet, but what you are losing is – in fact – muscle, not fat.

Why you might ask, do we retain body fat and lose muscle?

Simply put, primal instinct.

Back in the hunter-gatherer days, men and women ate everything that they could get their hands on because they knew it might be weeks before they had another meal. Our bodies are so amazing that in order to help them survive, the body learned to store as much fat as possible.

When you restrict your calorie intake, it sends a warning sign to your body to enter starvation mode and store up fat.

2. You Don’t Address Your Why

The second reason why fad diets don’t work is that you’re basically trying to cross the Atlantic ocean on a $3 pool float.

Sure, you’ll float for a while – but it’s not sustainable.

You need to address the underlying reason why you’re overeating and making poor food choices.

Analyze if your current relationship with food is influenced by other areas of your life such as relationships, career, depression, etc.

A mindset makeover might help you address the underlying issues that are affecting your waistline.

3. Fad Diets Aren’t Designed for YOU

Fad diets are designed to be marketable.

To such end, they rely on simple rules that can be easily communicated and followed.

This means that most of them are not balanced, they rely on extreme measures to get results.

Eating a well-rounded diet is not a one-rule ordeal, it is achieving a delicate balance between all the macros that fuel you with nutrients and energy.

Fad diets such as single-color food diets, eating X thing at Z time, low-carb/fat diets, stocking up on certain foods – or eliminating others altogether – deplete your body of essential nutrients that you need to fulfill your body’s unique needs.

Every person is an individual with unique needs, right? Your diet is no different.

Instead of hopping on the fad diet bandwagon, focus on making long-lasting and sustainable lifestyle changes that not only feed your body but also your soul.
